Daily Jen

Cultivating Kindness, Wonder, Laughter, Meaning & Other Essentials of Life

Jen [zhuhn, ruhn]
–noun (in Chinese philosophy)
That which brings the good in others to completion; a compassionate love for humanity or for the world as a whole.

Want to calculate your jen quotient?  Here’s how.

First, you’ll need to measure your daily experience of anything in the jen category, including awe, gratitude, humor, generosity, kindness, laughter, beauty, play, wonder, thoughtfulness & other essentials of life.

In column A, Give yourself one point if today you:

  • Laughed like you really meant it
  • Discovered beauty where you didn’t expect to find it
  • Committed a spontaneous act of anonymous kindness
  • Made, appreciated or shared something beautiful
  • Felt grateful
  • Experienced  a moment of awe, wonder, transcendence or any other state of grace
  • Laughed at yourself (or gracefully tolerated others laughing at you)

Next, you’ll need to measure the opposite experiences as well.

In column B, give yourself a point if today you:

  • Sweated the small stuff
  • Lost your cool
  • Were petty or unkind to yourself or others
  • Forgot to breath
  • Didn’t say ‘thanks’ even once all day
  • Let worry, anxiety or fear crowd out laughter, love and lightness
  • Took offense too easily

These are the short lists, just suggestions, but you get the idea.  Your lists could go on and on if you like.  To calculate your jen quotient divide Column A total by Column B total.

One day I hope to have a groovy iPhone app for this, but in the meantime you’re going to have to do the math yourself.

The higher the number you get as your result, the better off you are.  Accumulate high numbers day after day and win the Game of Life. ♥
